Synopsis
Called back by the haunting refrains of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, five ghosts (each reminiscent of certain musical stars) find themselves in their old playground – a Hollywood sound stage. While intermittently scaring the pants off the old gruff janitor, they recreate some of their favorite numbers. Eventually however, they become bored and begin to reflect on their life and career now gone. While cleaning, the janitor discovers a dusty can of film and begins to look at it frame by frame, and using theatre magic, the ghosts reenact one of their biggest hits – “Express Train to Broadway!”, in a hilarious spoof of movie musicals of the 30’s and 40’s. The janitor leaves the ghosts to themselves, reveling in his own memories of a bygone era. Satisfied that their lives and careers were still appreciated, our ghosts wistfully bid adieu.
Reviews
"Rhapsody in Gershwin, conceived and created by David Bishop and Shawn Churchman, is an entertaining revue featuring some of the most memorable songs of George Gershwin. What is so clever about this revue is that it is set in a long-forgotten Hollywood warehouse where the ghosts of old musicals come alive among costumes and props...Just hearing the great Gershwin songs is enough to satisfy a musical theatre fan's appetite, but the co-creators provide more than enough entertainment for a wonderful evening out."
