Synopsis

What inspires great composers and lyricists to create works of genius? The story of course. On the Street Where They Live: Lerner and Loewe explores the question of inspiration between the literary source material and this most literary of musical teams. Set in Higgins library, and using excerpts from Once and Future King, Pygmalion, Gigi, and others, this show connects the inspiration of the spoken word with the inspiration of Lerner and Loewe’s glorious, soaring melodies and insightful lyrics. Featuring songs from five hugely popular shows: My Fair Lady, Camelot, Brigadoon, Gigi, and Paint Your Wagon.

Reviews

STW's latest tribute to American music is a winner

"To say that Stamford Theatre Works' salute to Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe is an evening to remember is to say that virtually every moment brings back memories of a bygone era in America's musical theatre...David Bishop and Shawn Churchman have created an evening of music that is not simply a stand-and-deliver review of Lerner and Loewe's greatest hits. The dialogue linking the musical numbers includes dabbles of their letters and autobiographies, plus reviews and commentaries. The text is artfully woven...Thanks to Churchman's crisp direction, the players glided from scene to scene, number to number, relationship to relationship, without effort or misstep."

Loverly Revue - Lerner and Loewe's musical gems sparkle in new settings at Stamford Theatre Works

"A lilting and satisfying diversion awaits in the small red barn of Stamford Theatre Works, where 29 songs by the Broadway composers Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe have been arranged into a surprisingly original celebratory package. Within a library setting, the show features five engaging actors in small playlets that they frame by reading from books taken off the shelves...the case that the show is a valentine to two of Broadway's most famous contributors is already made when the cast closes the first act with a joyful Almost Like Being in Love."

"I can't think of a nicer way of spending a summer evening or afternoon than seeing the interesting and entertaining review of Lerner and Loewe's music playing now at Stamford Theatre Works..."
